The Nanaimo Brain Injury Society (NBIS) is a small but mighty registered non-profit society and charitable organization.
Since 1988, NBIS has provided support, education, and connection for brain injury survivors and their families.
Our dedicated staff, society members, volunteers, and Board of Directors form a firm foundation on which we build positive relationships with clients, families and the wider community.

Your donation supports free brain injury education through Concussion 101 presentations in School District 68, and public workshops like Understanding Brain Injury. Other education sessions on topics related to brain injury are also offered specifically for NBIS clients! These programs reduce stigma, improve understanding of symptoms and recovery, and help families better navigate life after brain injury.

NBIS helps people living with brain injury navigate complex systems. Through the Community Navigator program, NBIS provides one-on-one support and advocacy for applications, referrals and ongoing case management. These services help clients access services, benefits and community resources after brain injury.

Beyond the Community Navigator program, NBIS provides free, personalized support with trained peer volunteers, weekly social activities, and the Life After Brain Injury guided recovery program. Together, these supports create a community where clients feel understood, supported, and empowered to navigate the emotional and practical challenges of life after brain injury.

Your impact helps NBIS build awareness, connection and safety in the community. From exciting events like Hillbilly Hustle, Nanaimo Pride and Night Market, to initiatives such as Helmets for Kids; NBIS creates opportunities for the public to meaningfully engage, learn and give back.

For over 35 years, the Nanaimo Brain Injury Society has worked with people on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the Snuneymuxw, Snaw-naw-as, and Stz'uminus First Nations. We are grateful and acknowledge the strength, knowledge, and leadership of Indigenous communities. We recognize that health and community services have not always respected the rights or self-determination of Indigenous Peoples, and that these impacts are still felt today. NBIS remains committed to listening, learning, and doing better.
